Can You Ride a Scooter on Son Tra (Monkey Mountain) in Da Nang? 2026 Restrictions Explained

Last verified: 02 September 2026. Son Tra access rules can change after storms, maintenance work or safety decisions. On-site barriers, checkpoint staff, temporary signs and current official instructions take priority over any online guide.

Yes, you can ride an automatic scooter to parts of Son Tra Peninsula, including the normal lower-coast approach toward Linh Ung Pagoda in ordinary conditions. But automatic scooters (`xe tay ga`) are restricted on the controlled upper Son Tra sightseeing routes, including the routes used to reach Ban Co Peak.

The important distinction is not simply engine size. A Honda Vision, PCX, NMAX or an automatic scooter marketed as 50cc does not become acceptable on a controlled upper route just because its engine is smaller.

Son Tra is not one single open scooter route

Travel apps often show Son Tra as one connected road network. For visitors, that can be misleading.

It is more useful to separate Son Tra into two situations:

• Lower coastal access: roads serving places such as Linh Ung Pagoda, the Lady Buddha area and lower coastal viewpoints. These are separate from the controlled upper sightseeing network discussed below.
• Controlled upper-peninsula routes: forest and mountain roads toward places such as Ban Co Peak, Suoi Om, Bai Bac and the Heritage Banyan Tree. These routes have checkpoints, vehicle restrictions and visiting-hour controls.

An automatic scooter may be suitable for a normal lower-coast visit but still be prohibited from the controlled upper route you hoped to use later.

Do not assume that a navigation app suggesting a road means your vehicle is permitted to use it. At Son Tra, current barriers, signs and checkpoint instructions matter more than the route selected by Google Maps or another navigation app.

What are the current upper Son Tra vehicle restrictions?

The most recent public guidance we found was reported on 17 August 2026 by Tuoi Tre, citing the Son Tra Peninsula and Da Nang Tourism Beaches Management Board.

That update listed the following sightseeing routes and vehicle rules:

The key rule for a scooter renter is straightforward:

> Do not plan an upper Son Tra / Ban Co Peak ride on an automatic scooter.

Why do some official pages show a slightly different route layout?

Da Nang's official tourism portal also publishes a Son Tra route-management page. Its route descriptions are not completely synchronized with the newer August 2026 management-board update.

For example, the tourism portal describes an earlier configuration involving:

• the Hoang Sa / Bai Bac junction toward the Heritage Banyan Tree;
• Yet Kieu → Ban Co Peak → Bai Bac;
• Yet Kieu → Suoi Om;

with automatic scooters excluded on the controlled vehicle sections.

The August 2026 management-board update reports a changed current operating situation, including a temporarily suspended Tien Sa route and walking-only treatment for the Bai Bac – Heritage Banyan Tree section.

This is exactly why Son Tra should not be treated as a static route. Use the latest management-board guidance and on-site checkpoint instructions when they differ from an older online route map.

Can I ride an automatic scooter to Linh Ung Pagoda?

In normal conditions, yes.

Linh Ung Pagoda and the Lady Buddha are reached from the lower coastal side of Son Tra. This normal coastal approach is separate from the controlled upper sightseeing routes where the automatic-scooter restriction applies.

For practical planning:

• Linh Ung Pagoda / Lady Buddha via the normal lower coastal approach: normally accessible by automatic scooter.
• Ban Co Peak / controlled upper Son Tra network: do not plan to enter on an automatic scooter.

Temporary weather, maintenance or safety controls can still affect lower-road access on a particular day. If barriers or staff stop traffic, follow the instruction rather than relying on what was normally possible before.

Can I ride to Ban Co Peak on a Honda Vision, PCX, NMAX or automatic 50cc?

Do not plan to do so.

The current upper-route controls exclude `xe tay ga` — automatic scooters — on the controlled motorbike routes toward Ban Co.

That means engine displacement is not the deciding factor for this route restriction.

Examples include:

• Honda Vision
• Honda PCX
• Yamaha NMAX
• Yamaha NVX / Aerox
• other automatic scooters
• automatic scooters marketed as 50cc

A bigger automatic scooter is still automatic. A smaller automatic scooter is still automatic.

What about a 50cc scooter and the driving-licence rules?

This needs a separate legal distinction.

Under Vietnam's current Road Traffic Order and Safety Law, `xe gắn máy` is defined by more than the number printed on an engine label. A qualifying `xe gắn máy` must have a design speed not exceeding 50 km/h and, for a combustion engine, displacement not exceeding 50 cm³; for an electric motor, power must not exceed 4 kW.

The law exempts riders of `xe gắn máy` from the motorcycle-driving-licence requirement that applies to motorcycle riders, subject to the other legal conditions for operating the vehicle.

But that does not create an exception to Son Tra's route-management rules.

So the correct way to think about it is:

> A vehicle may qualify as `xe gắn máy` under national traffic law and not require a motorcycle driving licence, while still being prohibited from a specific Son Tra route because it is an automatic scooter.

Do not use "50cc" as a shortcut for deciding whether a vehicle is legal for a particular road.

What type of bike can use the controlled upper routes?

The August 2026 management-board guidance allows non-automatic motorbikes on the applicable controlled motorbike sections when those routes are open.

That can include an appropriate manual or semi-automatic motorbike rather than a `xe tay ga`.

But vehicle permission is only one part of the decision.

Before considering an upper Son Tra ride, check all of these:

1. You are legally entitled to ride that vehicle.

A route allowing a type of motorbike does not give an unlicensed rider permission to operate it.

2. You are competent on that type of motorbike.

Do not switch to a manual or semi-automatic bike purely to bypass the automatic-scooter restriction if you are not comfortable riding it.

3. The exact route is open.

Storm damage, maintenance and safety work can temporarily change access.

4. The checkpoint allows your vehicle through.

Follow the current signs and staff instructions even if an older article or map says otherwise.

5. Conditions are appropriate for a mountain road.

Poor visibility, strong wind, heavy rain and storm-related debris can turn a normal ride into a bad decision.

If you cannot satisfy all five, use the lower-coast sights instead.

Son Tra visiting hours

The published visiting hours for the controlled sightseeing routes are:

• March through September: 07:30–18:30
• October through February: 07:30–17:30

These are operating windows, not a promise that every route will be open every day.

The management plan allows sightseeing activities to be temporarily suspended when dangerous-weather warnings are issued. Post-storm repairs can also close an individual route even during normal visiting hours.

Plan to leave the controlled mountain area well before closing time rather than timing your descent to the final minute.

What should I do if I rent an automatic scooter?

An automatic scooter can still be useful for a Son Tra day — just plan around the roads it is actually permitted to use.

Good lower-coast options in normal conditions

You can build a ride around places such as:

• Linh Ung Pagoda / Lady Buddha
• lower coastal viewpoints reached from the normal public road
• the Man Thai / coastal approach toward Son Tra
• Da Nang's beachfront roads around My Khe

You can also make Marble Mountains / Non Nuoc a separate southbound ride rather than trying to turn Son Tra into an upper mountain loop.

Do not build an "upper Son Tra loop" around an automatic scooter

One of the most common planning mistakes is to choose an automatic rental scooter first and then try to make a navigation app connect every Son Tra viewpoint afterward.

Reverse that process.

Decide which places you actually want to reach, then check:

• whether the road is currently open;
• whether your vehicle type is permitted;
• whether your licence covers the vehicle;
• whether you are comfortable riding it;
• whether the weather is suitable.

If Ban Co Peak is the main purpose of your trip and your only appropriate rental option is an automatic scooter, use another form of transport for that part of the day rather than looking for an unofficial bypass.

Before you ride to Son Tra: checklist

• Check the same-day weather forecast.
• Check for official dangerous-weather warnings.
• Confirm whether your intended upper route is currently open.
• Confirm whether your bike is automatic, semi-automatic or manual.
• Do not assume "50cc" by itself decides the legal vehicle category.
• Carry the documents required for the vehicle you are riding.
• Follow checkpoint instructions and temporary signs.
• Do not follow a navigation app past a restriction.
• Plan to leave controlled routes before closing time.
• Have a lower-coast alternative ready.

FAQ

Are all scooters banned from Son Tra?

No. The restriction is not a blanket ban on every scooter everywhere on Son Tra. Automatic scooters are restricted on the controlled upper sightseeing routes. The normal lower-coast approach toward Linh Ung Pagoda is a separate route and is normally accessible to ordinary scooter traffic.

Can I take a Honda Vision to Ban Co Peak?

Do not plan to. A Honda Vision is an automatic scooter, and automatic scooters are excluded from the controlled upper motorbike routes toward Ban Co under the current management rules.

Can I take a PCX or NMAX to Ban Co Peak because it has more power?

No. The restriction is based on the scooter / automatic vehicle type on the controlled route, not on whether the engine is powerful enough to climb the hill.

Can I take an automatic 50cc scooter up Monkey Mountain?

Do not plan to use an automatic 50cc scooter on the controlled upper routes. Even if the vehicle legally qualifies as `xe gắn máy` under Vietnam's national traffic law, that does not override a local route rule excluding automatic scooters.

Does every 50cc scooter automatically count as `xe gắn máy`?

Not necessarily. Under the current law, the category also depends on design speed. For a combustion-engine `xe gắn máy`, design speed must not exceed 50 km/h and engine displacement must not exceed 50 cm³. Electric `xe gắn máy` are subject to the same design-speed limit and a motor-power ceiling of 4 kW.

What time do the upper Son Tra routes close?

The published controlled-route visiting hours are:

• 07:30–18:30 from March through September
• 07:30–17:30 from October through February

Temporary closures can override these hours.

Can the routes close after storms or dangerous weather?

Yes. The August 2026 management-board update reported one upper route temporarily suspended for post-storm repairs, and the management plan allows sightseeing to be suspended when dangerous-weather warnings are in effect.

Why does an older map or article show a different Son Tra route?

The controlled network can change after safety reviews, storm damage or repairs. Public official pages are not always updated at exactly the same time. Use the newest management-board information you can find, then follow current barriers and checkpoint instructions on the day.
