Da Nang is one of the best bases for motorbike travel in Southeast Asia. Within an hour of the city center you can climb a coastal mountain pass, loop a forested peninsula, ride empty beach roads for hours, or push through rice paddies to a UNESCO town. Most travelers rent a bike for 2–4 days and only cover three or four of the obvious rides.

This guide covers ten routes we regularly recommend to riders staying in Da Nang — real distances, real conditions, and the right bike from our fleet for each. Always check current road and weather conditions before you ride, especially during the September–December monsoon.

1. Hai Van Pass (Da Nang → Lang Co Loop)

Distance: ~60 km round trip from central Da Nang | Time: 3–4 hours including stops | Difficulty: Intermediate

The single most famous motorbike road in Vietnam, made widely known by Top Gear's 2008 Vietnam Special. About 21 km of cliff-side curves between Da Nang and Lang Co lagoon, with the Hai Van Tunnel carrying almost all through truck traffic since 2005. The summit sits at roughly 500 m and offers clear views back over Da Nang Bay on a good morning.

  • Best bike: Honda ADV 160, PCX 160, or any geared 150cc+. A 110cc automatic is doable solo in dry conditions but underpowered two-up on the climb.
  • Tip: Ride in the morning, 7–10 AM, before the clouds build. The descent is faster and more fun on the return.
We have a full Hai Van Pass route and safety guide with turn-by-turn details.

2. Son Tra Peninsula Loop

Distance: ~30 km loop | Time: 2–3 hours including stops | Difficulty: Easy

A forested peninsula that forms the head of Da Nang Bay. The loop includes Linh Ung Pagoda with the 67-meter Lady Buddha statue, several small beaches (Bai But, Bai Da Den, Bai Xep), and viewpoints back over the city. The road is paved and the traffic is light outside weekends.

  • Best bike: Any scooter — Vision, Janus, PCX 160. A manual is overkill.
  • Tip: Stop at the small beaches on the back (north) side of the peninsula — they see almost no tourists and are good for a swim.

3. Da Nang → Hoi An Coastal Road

Distance: ~30 km one way | Time: 45 minutes riding + half-day in Hoi An | Difficulty: Easy

The most popular day trip in Central Vietnam. South on Vo Nguyen Giap past My Khe and Non Nuoc beaches, then through open countryside to Hoi An Ancient Town. Flat, well-paved, and scenic the whole way. We cover both the coastal and inland options in the Da Nang to Hoi An guide.

  • Best bike: Any 110cc or 150cc scooter. The whole route is flat.
  • Tip: Park at the official lots outside the Old Town — the inner streets are pedestrian-only and the fine for riding in is around 200,000 VND.

4. Marble Mountains Loop

Distance: ~15 km loop | Time: 2–3 hours | Difficulty: Easy

A short loop combining the Marble Mountains (a cluster of five limestone hills with caves, pagodas, and viewpoints), the Non Nuoc stone-carving village at the base, and the beachfront road back through Da Nang. Good for a half-day if you want a low-stress ride.

  • Best bike: Any scooter, even a 110cc automatic.
  • Tip: Climb at least one of the Marble Mountains for the view north toward Son Tra. Entry is 40,000 VND and the Thuy Son peak is the most visited.

5. Ba Na Hills Mountain Road

Distance: ~50 km round trip | Time: 4–5 hours including the resort | Difficulty: Intermediate

The road up to Sun World Ba Na Hills, the resort famous for the Golden Hands Bridge. About 25 km of constant climbing from the coast to the resort entrance at around 1,400 m, on a wide, well-maintained road through forest. You can either ride to the top and pay the cable-car entry, or take the cable car round-trip from the base and skip the climb on the bike.

  • Best bike: PCX 160, NVX 155, or any 150cc+ scooter with good brakes for the descent.
  • Tip: Weekdays are dramatically less crowded. Weekends in summer bring tour-bus traffic to the summit and the photo spots are mobbed.

6. Da Nang → Hue via the Tunnel (with Hai Van Detour)

Distance: ~150 km one way | Time: Full day | Difficulty: Advanced

For experienced riders who want the full Da Nang-to-Hue experience without backtracking. Ride Hai Van Pass south-to-north, continue along the coastal road past Lang Co lagoon, then either rejoin Highway 1A through the Hai Van Tunnel or stay on the old coastal road through fishing villages toward Hue. The Hue side has its own scenic stretch along the coastal lagoon south of the city.

  • Best bike: Honda ADV 160, CB150R, MT-15, or any geared 150cc+ with enough power for a long day.
  • Tip: Plan to stay overnight in Hue. Doing this round-trip in one day is exhausting and the Hue attractions deserve time.

7. Lang Co Beach Run

Distance: ~70 km round trip from Da Nang | Time: Half day | Difficulty: Easy

A relaxing ride south of Hai Van Pass along the long crescent of Lang Co beach. Mostly flat, almost no traffic, and a string of seafood restaurants right on the sand. Combine with Hai Van Pass for a full day.

  • Best bike: Any scooter. This is a flat coastal cruise.
  • Tip: The water at Lang Co is calm and clean. Bring a swimsuit and plan a long lunch.

8. Son Tra Summit Ride (Monkey Mountain)

Distance: ~20 km round trip from city center | Time: 1.5–2 hours | Difficulty: Intermediate

The climb to the top of Son Tra Peninsula, where the US military operated a radar station during the Vietnam War. The road gets steep and the surface is rough in places, but the 360° view of Da Nang, the coastline, and the mountains is the best in the area. The summit is also home to the rare red-shanked douc langur, and you may see troops of monkeys on the way up.

  • Best bike: A geared 150cc or the ADV 160 — the steep sections punish a small automatic.
  • Tip: Go early to avoid heat and afternoon clouds. The road closes occasionally for military or forestry work, so check before you go.

9. Da Nang City Beach Cruise

Distance: ~25 km loop along the coast | Time: 1.5–2 hours | Difficulty: Easy

A pure leisure ride. From the Han River, head north along Vo Nguyen Giap past My Khe Beach, around to Non Nuoc, then back through the city via the Tran Hung Dao riverfront promenade. Stop for coffee, swim, take photos. The city beaches are well-maintained and the road is wide.

  • Best bike: Any scooter. A Honda Vision is perfect.
  • Tip: Best at sunset. The light over the Marble Mountains from the northern end of My Khe is consistently the most-photographed city view in Da Nang.

10. Hai Van Pass → Elephant Springs (Suối Voi)

Distance: ~90 km round trip from Da Nang | Time: 5–6 hours | Difficulty: Advanced

The full adventure: ride Hai Van Pass from Da Nang to the north side, then continue about 20 km past Lang Co to Elephant Springs, a natural swimming hole at the base of a waterfall in the jungle. Cold water, shaded rocks, and far fewer tourists than the beach. The road past the pass is rougher and less traveled.

  • Best bike: Geared 150cc+ — Honda CB150R, MT-15, or ADV 160.
  • Tip: Bring a towel and dry clothes. The water is genuinely cold even in summer. There is a small entry fee (around 30,000 VND) and basic changing facilities.

  • Day 3: Da Nang → Hoi An on the coastal road. Explore the Old Town. Ride back at sunset or stay overnight.
